Detailed description of Resort At The Mountain - The Courses

Resort At The Mountain, The Courses is a Resort/open to the public for daily fee play, 27 hole golf facility located in Welches, Oregon. The facility has 3 nine hole courses, Pine Cone, Thistle and Foxglove. These courses were each built at least 20 years apart. The courses have all been remodled and the designer credited is Billy Welch.

The Resort at The Mountain's 27-holes of golf nestled in the Salmon River Valley of the Mt. Hood National Forest, is open to Resort guests, members and daily-fee play.

Tee off on three distinct nine hole tracks. There's the region's oldest course, the Pine Cone Nine. And the signature Foxglove Nine. Plus the forgiving Thistle Nine. Even non-golfers will enjoy spectacular views from the 19th hole!

The Courses truly is an unmatched golf experience for well-intentioned beginners to seasoned pros. Its natural landscape and views are awe-inspiring. Even breathtaking. Golfers seeking an exceptional outing in the Mt. Hood area will find The Courses one of the best and most scenic golf choices in all of Oregon.

In 1928, two golfing enthusiasts - Ralph Shattuck and George Waale leased Bill Welch's hayfield and had a nine-hole golf course built. In 1939 the golf course reverted back to Billy and he continued to operate the resort until his death in 1942.

The Pine Cone Nine was built in 1928 by town founder, Billy Welch, Pine Cone is the fourth oldest course in Oregon. Measuring 3,299 yards and playing to par 36. Its distinctive feature is the Wee Burn stream.

In 1948 Eugene Bowman acquired it. Eugene and his wife Peggy owned Bowman's for the next 30 years, adding an additional nine holes of golf.

The Thistle Nine was constructed in the mid-1960s, Thistle has undergone the most dramatic facelift. While measuring only 2,956 yards and playing to a par 34, its hazards on seven of the nine holes reward golfers who best manage their game.

In 1973 American Guaranty Financial Corporation purchased land across Welches Road from Bowman's and built a lodge, a conference facility, a restaurant, more rental units. In 1979 it purchased Bowman's Resort, merging the two properties and naming it Rippling River Resort.

The Foxglove Nine first opened for play in 1981. Foxglove is considered the most challenging of the three 9-hole tracks, measuring 3,106 yards. It plays to a par 36. An extra sleeve of golf balls is suggested when playing this course!

Ed and Janice Hopper bought the resort in 1989 and transformed it into The Resort at The Mountain. With their remodeling efforts came the Scottish theme and tradition. With The Resort's recent sale in December, 2007 begins its latest chapter in its golf and lodging history.

I thought the course was a good challenge for the bogey golfer. Course is tight, but fair and I am trying to figure out when I am going back. 2nd time around I think a person could score on the course.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again
